I performed suction yesterday. There was a pt with a tracheostomy connected to a suction catheter (closed system so there was no mess). Since he had secretions that needed to be removed, I inserted the catheter until I elicited a cough and the pulled it out slowly holding down the suction button.
This was a big success for me. The first time I saw this procedure performed, the cough startled me so much I almost dropped my notepad.
Also, last night was my roomy's 26th birthday. Happy Birthday Asly!

Sarah this blogging is so cool. It sounds like your are doing great and although maybe a bit overwhelmed right now, I foresee at time soon when you will have "no worries". I hope you are "ringing" Woody often.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I hope this makes it to you, as blogging is new to me! Please excuse the dorky name, as it is my AIM screen name from middle school I think! I am glad to see you arrived safely and are taking off! How big is the hospital you are at? Hope you are enjoying it all (you should be well prepared for the cardiopulmonary section of boards, I am jealous!!!!)

Jenny you are so funny! I think there are only 120 beds. It is a "private" hospital in a country where everyone has basic insurance, so these people are well pampered during their stay. Everyone gets their own room...and just about everyone gets seen twice a day. I have spent this whole week studying cardiopulmonary stuff, so hopefully I will have some time to look at the OTHER material that will be on the boards. :)
